Warner Bros. Studio Tour London: The Making of Harry Potter

A guide to visiting the Harry Potter Studio Tour in Leavesden — what to expect, how to pace it, and why it's worth the trip even for kids who haven't seen all the films yet.

What the Studio Tour Actually Is

The Warner Bros. Studio Tour London is not a theme park. It is the actual working studio complex in Leavesden, Hertfordshire, where all eight Harry Potter films were produced — converted into a permanent exhibition after the final film wrapped.

That distinction matters because what you are walking through are real sets, real costumes, and real props. The Great Hall was not built for this tour. It was built for the films, preserved, and it is every bit as large and detailed as you would expect.

It is one of the most well-executed film attractions we have ever visited, and that held true even for family members who were not deep Harry Potter fans going in.

What the Studio Tour Actually Is
The studio tour feels more like a deep behind-the-scenes exhibit than a theme park.

Getting There

The studio is in Leavesden, about 20 miles northwest of central London. From central London we took the train from London Euston to Watford Junction, then the official shuttle bus from Watford to the studio — that rail-plus-shuttle combo was the most straightforward option for us.

Tickets are timed-entry and sell out weeks in advance, particularly during school holidays and the lead-up to Christmas. Book as soon as you have a date confirmed — this is not one you can walk up to on the day.

There is also a large car park on site if you are driving, and the approach is well-signposted from the motorway.

Getting there was straightforward once we followed the Watford Junction route.

The Great Hall

You enter through the original studio doors and the tour begins in a screening room before the doors open directly into the Great Hall. The scale of the room is genuinely impressive — long feasting tables dressed as mid-ceremony, house banners overhead, and costumes for all four houses lining both sides of the hall.

This is the most photographed section of the tour and is often busy, but the staff manage the flow well. Take your time here — it sets the tone for everything that follows.

Sets, Props, and Costumes

The first soundstage covers an enormous range of sets spread across the full run of eight films. Dumbledore's office, the Gryffindor common room, the boys' dormitory, the Potions classroom, Professor Umbridge's pink office, and the Ministry of Magic atrium corridor are all here.

The costume and prop archive sections are exceptional — the level of detail in everything from Dobby's sock to the full Quidditch uniforms makes you realise just how much went into these productions.

Wand choreography stations, broomstick flying experiences, and interactive moments are scattered throughout, which helps break up the walking for younger visitors.

Sets, Props, and Costumes
The craftsmanship in the sets, props, and costumes is what makes the visit special.

Creatures and the Dark Arts

The second major section covers the darker side of the Wizarding World. Full-scale animatronic creatures — including the Hungarian Horntail, Buckbeak, and Aragog — are displayed alongside detailed Death Eater costumes, Voldemort's robes, and the Horcrux collection.

The Forbidden Forest sequence is deliberately atmospheric, with low lighting, dense fog effects, and large creature rigs positioned throughout. It is impressive but can be intense for younger or more sensitive kids.

The creature workshop section breaks down the practical effects work behind creatures like Dobby and the centaurs, which was a highlight for anyone curious about how the films were made.

Creatures and the Dark Arts
The darker creature and magic sections gave the tour more variety than we expected.

Diagon Alley

The covered Diagon Alley section is the most visually impressive stretch of the entire tour. The full street facade — Ollivanders, Gringotts Bank, Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes, Flourish and Blotts, Madam Malkin's — is all here, and you can walk the entire length of it.

The shopfronts are dressed exactly as they appeared in the films, and the cobblestone street has been perfectly preserved. This section produces more photos than almost anywhere else on the tour.

Allow extra time here. It is easy to spend 30 to 40 minutes just taking it in.

Platform 9¾ and the Hogwarts Express

The full-size Hogwarts Express engine is parked on a recreation of Platform 9¾, and you can board and walk through the train carriages, which are dressed with scenes and props from the films.

There is also a photo opportunity at the luggage trolley disappearing into the wall, which has a queue but moves quickly.

The bridge connecting the inside to the backlot passes through a recreation of the King's Cross station setting — a nice transition between the two halves of the tour.

The Hogwarts Castle Model

The tour finishes with a 1:24 scale architectural model of Hogwarts Castle, which was used for all exterior establishing shots throughout the film series. It is housed in its own dedicated room with dramatic lighting and a slow circuit walkway around it.

The craftsmanship is remarkable — hundreds of tiny lit windows, the cliffs and grounds all detailed — and it is one of those moments where the scale of what went into these films really lands.

This is a quiet, almost contemplative end to the main tour route, and it tends to land differently depending on how deep a connection you have to the films.

Butterbeer and the Backlot

The outdoor backlot sits between the two main soundstages and includes the original Knight Bus, the Dursleys' car, the Weasleys' Ford Anglia, and facade sections from Privet Drive and Godric's Hollow.

The Butterbeer stand is out here, and there is a second one inside. Get the frozen version — it is better than the regular, and both are very sweet.

The gift shop at the exit is very large and genuinely hard to get through quickly with kids. Budget time and budget money. The wand selection alone will occupy most children for a solid 20 minutes.
