Design and rooms

The building itself is the first thing worth knowing — Capital Gate is listed as the world's most inclined tower, leaning at about 18 degrees. From inside the hotel that tilt gives certain rooms an unusual sense of perspective. The lobby takes full advantage of it with a dramatic atrium and art installations that feel considered rather than gratuitous.

The room we had was large, with a proper separate sitting area and a bathroom finished with the kind of hardware that you actually notice. The overall design is sleek without feeling cold, which is harder to pull off than most high-end hotels manage.

Location and service

The biggest drawback is the location. Capital Gate sits away from Abu Dhabi's main tourist and dining areas, which means every outing requires a ride. We used Uber for everything, and the apps are reliable in Abu Dhabi — but it still adds friction, especially late at night. If we stayed again, we would rent a car instead.

Staff were a bit hit or miss, which stood out more because the rest of the hotel feels so polished. Most interactions were fine, but the consistency was not at the level you would expect from an Andaz property.

What made it worth it

Breakfast was the best meal of the stay, and it was included with the points booking. The spread covered a lot of ground, quality was genuinely good, and it was one of the more relaxed mornings of the trip. The rooftop pool added to that — long, narrow format with good views out over the city, and in the late afternoon when we used it, nearly empty.

The points rate was the biggest surprise. At a World of Hyatt Category 4 redemption, we were getting a clearly premium hotel for what translated to a mid-range cash equivalent. That gap is what makes it such an easy recommendation for anyone with Hyatt points to use.

The honest tradeoff

Andaz Capital Gate is a strong hotel in a weak location, and knowing that going in changes the experience significantly. If you are combining this stay with time in Dubai, the Abu Dhabi portion works best at the start or end of the trip rather than in the middle — that way the location limitation does not interrupt your momentum.

We would stay here again on points. We would not book it at cash rates when Abu Dhabi has more centrally located options at similar price points. The hotel earns its rating because of the design, the breakfast, and the pool — not because of where it sits in the city.
