Verona Guide
A short Verona guide focused on whether the city is worth a stop, what stands out most, and how it fits into a northern Italy rail itinerary.

Quick Snapshot
We visited Verona as a day trip from Venice and it turned out to be one of the most enjoyable stops of the trip.
The train ride was straightforward, and once we arrived the city felt easy and welcoming right away.
Arriving in Verona
One thing that worked especially well in Verona was how easy it was to reach the historic center from the train station.
The walk into town was pleasant and gave us a chance to see more of the city rather than immediately jumping into crowded tourist areas.
By the time we reached the historic center, the atmosphere felt lively but not overwhelming.
Best Parts of the City
Verona is full of beautiful streets and piazzas that make it easy to wander without a strict plan.
One of the highlights is the Verona Arena, a smaller Roman amphitheater that sits right in the middle of the city. If you are not visiting Rome on the same trip, it is an especially nice sight to have on the itinerary because you still get that colosseum-style hit of history in a much smaller setting.
We did not make it inside, but it was still very worth seeing from the outside and gave the city a sense of historical depth right in the middle of an otherwise easy walking day.
Another stop that felt almost mandatory was Juliet's balcony. It is undeniably touristy, but still fun to see in person.
A Great Walking City
Verona is very manageable on foot, which makes it particularly enjoyable for families.
The historic center is compact enough that you can explore most of the main areas without feeling rushed, and the overall pace of the city felt relaxed compared with some other destinations.
Where We Ate
Food ended up being one of the highlights of our visit to Verona. We stopped at several places throughout the day while exploring.
- Biasioli Baxan Frutta E Verdura
- Bar Ristorante Alla Ragione
- Osteria Alla Torre
How Verona Fits a Larger Trip
Verona fits perfectly into a northern Italy itinerary. It works especially well as a day trip from Venice, but it could also be a comfortable overnight stop if you want a slower pace.
For us, visiting for the day felt like the right balance. It gave us enough time to experience the city without feeling like we had to rush.
Final Thoughts
Verona was one of those cities that everyone in our group genuinely loved. It had a relaxed charm, beautiful streets, great food, and just enough major sights to keep the day interesting.
If you're traveling through northern Italy, it is absolutely worth adding Verona to your route.
