Genoa Guide

We visited Genoa as a day trip from Sestri Levante and it ended up being one of the most unexpectedly rewarding stops of our time in Liguria.

At first, we got off at the wrong train station and landed in a part of the city that felt rougher and not especially inviting. For a moment, it seemed like Genoa might be a mistake. But after some walking and reorienting ourselves, the city completely changed.

What makes Genoa interesting is that it feels like a real Italian city rather than a polished tourist stop. It has scale, energy, grit, great food, and a sense of everyday life that makes it stand out from the smaller resort and coastal towns nearby.

If your Liguria itinerary is filled with postcard-perfect villages and seaside walks, Genoa adds something different. It brings urban life, shopping, architecture, and a stronger sense of local rhythm.

By the time we found our footing in the city, it became clear that Genoa is absolutely worth visiting.

Genoa felt especially good for wandering, eating, and shopping. Once you move into the more central and appealing parts of the city, it has the feel of a major Italian destination that simply gets less attention than cities like Florence or Venice.

That turned out to be part of the appeal. It felt substantial and lived-in, with enough to do that you could easily spend more than just a few hours there if you wanted to.

One of the easiest highlights of the day was a stop at Gelateria Balbi. After walking through the city, a gelato break was the perfect reset.

Like many Italian cities, Genoa rewards simple moments like this. A short pause for gelato often becomes one of the most memorable parts of exploring.

Genoa fits very naturally into a broader Liguria itinerary, especially if you are staying somewhere like Sestri Levante, Santa Margherita, or another coastal base along the rail line.

As a day trip, it adds a completely different dimension to the region. After several smaller towns, Genoa gives you scale, urban variety, and a different kind of energy without needing to change hotels.

For us, it worked very well as a day trip and ended up being a stop we would highly recommend.

Genoa was one of those cities that surprised us in the best way. A shaky first impression gave way to a day full of good food, shopping, and the feeling of discovering a city that deserves more attention.

If you are building out a Liguria route, Genoa is not just a transit point. It is a real stop, and a very worthwhile one.
