Sestri Levante worked for us because it made Liguria feel easy.

It has the pastel buildings, waterfront views, and narrow old-town lanes people want from this stretch of coast, but it feels more livable and less intense than some of the more famous nearby stops. You can wander for an hour, stop for gelato, sit by the water, and still feel like the day has plenty of room left in it.

The trains also make the region feel connected in a very practical way. You can spend the day in a busier destination and still come back to a calmer base in the evening, which ended up being a much better rhythm than sleeping somewhere different each night.

Baia del Silenzio is the postcard view, but more broadly the whole seafront setup makes family days simple. The water is calmer than at rougher beach towns, the town itself is close at hand, and it never felt difficult to shift between swimming, snacks, stroller-time, and a slower walk back through town.

That combination made the destination feel more like a real vacation base than just a pretty stop on the map.
