Best use of the trip

This was a short birthday celebration weekend without kids, and the whole trip worked because it stayed focused. We booked cash flights from Burbank to Santa Rosa on Alaska Airlines, picked up a rental car, and kept the plan centered on one hotel, a few strong winery appointments, and a handful of meals that felt worth the occasion.

Flying into Santa Rosa made the whole weekend easier. It kept the arrival manageable and made it possible to go straight into a wine country stay without the heavier feel of a larger airport transfer.

Where to stay

We used Hyatt points for two nights at Alila Napa Valley, and it was exactly the right kind of hotel for this trip. The room had vineyard views, a fire pit on the balcony, and a bathtub built into the shower area, which gave the stay a polished, indulgent feel without trying too hard.

The hotel itself felt properly five-star and made the weekend feel like a real occasion rather than just a tasting trip. Another practical advantage was that it sits directly next to Beringer, even though we did not actually visit the winery. The location made the whole St. Helena side of the trip feel very easy.

What is actually worth doing

We visited three wineries over the course of the weekend: Raymond, Schramsberg, and Coppola in Sonoma. That ended up being the right number. It was enough to make the trip feel wine-focused, but not so much that the schedule started feeling like work.

Outside the tastings, the best stops were Auberge du Soleil, Model Bakery, La Toque, and RH Yountville. That mix gave the trip the right rhythm: one or two more elevated moments, a couple of casual classics, and enough downtime to actually enjoy the hotel and the drive between places.

For a short Napa and Sonoma weekend, that is really the formula. One strong hotel, three winery visits at most, and a few meals you are actually excited about.
