An Unforgettable Napa Birthday: The French Laundry & North Block Hotel

This trip was really built around a birthday celebration at The French Laundry, so the whole point was to keep the stay tight, polished, and focused on one major meal rather than trying to turn it into a packed Napa itinerary.

We stayed at the North Block Hotel in Yountville and it was absolutely perfect for this kind of trip. The room felt new and very nice, and the bathroom had heated floors and a giant tub, which made the stay feel even more celebratory.

For a short Yountville weekend, it is hard to imagine a better fit. The hotel matched the tone of the trip without feeling stuffy.

Dinner was the centerpiece of the trip, and it earned its reputation. The tasting menu ran for several hours and covered far more courses than we expected — the kitchen sends out a long procession of small preparations before you even reach the main courses. What stood out most was not any single dish but how the service team made the whole thing feel warm and personal rather than stiff or formal.

The kitchen tour at the end was a genuine surprise. It felt like being let backstage somewhere significant, and it gave the meal a sense of occasion that carried into the rest of the evening.

The French Laundry books out weeks in advance. We secured a reservation through the Tock app, which releases tables on a rolling basis — worth checking regularly if you are flexible on date.

North Block is the right size for Yountville — small enough to feel personal, polished enough that the room lives up to the occasion. The heated bathroom floors and deep soaking tub are not throwaway details when you are celebrating something; they actually extended the evening in the right way. We came back from dinner, drew a bath, and the trip ended exactly as it should.

The hotel is a short walk from the main stretch of Yountville, which means you can reach Ad Hoc, Bouchon, and the rest of the Thomas Keller properties on foot. For a long dinner night, that matters.

Yountville in February felt uncrowded and quiet in a way that peak-season Napa never does. The restaurants were accessible, the tasting rooms were relaxed, and the town had a stillness that made the whole trip feel more like a proper escape.

For a birthday or anniversary where the goal is a great meal and a great room rather than wine touring, this is the right version of Napa to book. Keep the itinerary short and focused — one major dinner, one hotel, two nights — and it becomes one of the easier trips to pull off well.
