Why We Regret Staying at Portola Hotel & Spa Monterey (Honest Review)

We checked into the Portola Hotel & Spa expecting a relaxing coastal retreat, but our two-night stay was plagued by issues. Despite the premium pricing, we were required to pay extra for early check-in—a nickel-and-diming practice that sets a poor tone for a 'resort' property.

The stay itself was far from restful. We were repeatedly awakened by noise from the valet operations outside, followed by a disruptive false fire alarm that went off during our visit. For the price point, the lack of peace and professional management was frustrating and ultimately ruined the experience.

On a positive note, the hotel was kept clean and the physical location is decent, offering relatively easy access to the local wharf area. The property includes a small pool, which is functional but underwhelming for a hotel of this size and cost.

Our stay overlapped with the start of Car Week, which transformed the area into a packed scene — the hotel felt more like a convention property than a coastal retreat, and the energy didn't match what we were after. The surrounding blocks have a slightly gritty feel, though there's no shortage of dining options nearby. Crepes of Brittany was a genuine highlight for breakfast and worth seeking out.

Getting around with kids is worth thinking through in advance. The Aquarium is an obvious draw but not a realistic walk with little ones — we relied on Ubers, which were consistently easy to get. The trolley stops right in front of the hotel, which sounds ideal, but in practice it fills up so fast that boarding with multiple people becomes nearly impossible. The Marriott down the road has a similar feel and similar price point — both properties show their age, so neither has a clear edge if you're weighing options.

Monterey overall feels overpriced and not worth more than a quick day trip. Given the service failures and the high cost of the Portola, we would not recommend staying here. Your money is better spent elsewhere on the Central Coast where you can find genuine hospitality and value.
