LA to Monterey Road Trip: What Worked, What We Skipped & Best Family Stops
What worked—and what we would skip—on a five-day family drive from Los Angeles through Paso Robles to Monterey.
The drive: Central Coast connectivity
We drove from Los Angeles to Monterey with two nights in Paso Robles in the middle. Tesla FSD handled much of the long freeway stretch, while Supercharger stops gave everyone a predictable reason to get out, use the restroom, and find snacks. That pacing mattered more than trying to make the drive feel fast.
The route changes quickly once you leave Los Angeles: freeway, dry hills, wine country, then coast. We would still break it up in Paso Robles rather than doing the whole drive in one push with kids.
Paso Robles: A family-friendly escape
We spent two nights at Allegretto Vineyard Resort, and it earned its place as more than a stopover. The kids had room to run around, the pool gave us an easy afternoon plan, and there were quiet corners when work could not wait. It was a much easier family setup than trying to make a compact downtown hotel do everything.
Downtown Paso Robles was best as a low-stakes evening: walk the square, browse a little, and have dinner. We did not try to build a packed wine-country itinerary around it, which made the stop feel like a break rather than another destination to conquer.

Monterey and the coast
We spent our final two nights at the Portola Hotel & Spa. Its location was convenient, but Monterey felt expensive for how little time we wanted to spend there. One day was enough for us; we would use the area as a base for the coast rather than expect the town itself to carry a longer stay.
17-Mile Drive was the reason to make this part of the trip. The views and short stops gave us the coastal day we wanted. We also went to the Monterey Bay Aquarium and found it impressive but pricey. Carmel is beautiful, but it is another place where the bill rises quickly.
