Miami Guys' Trip: What We Loved (And Why You Shouldn't Base in Fort Lauderdale)

We stayed in an Airbnb in Fort Lauderdale and would not recommend doing that again. It worked logistically for the Dolphins game, but as a base for the trip overall it was the wrong call — every time we wanted to be in Miami, we first had to get there.

The biggest lesson from the trip is that we would stay in Miami next time instead of Fort Lauderdale. Either South Beach for beach access or Brickell for walkability and nightlife. Miami is where we wanted to spend our time, and the extra separation took away from that.

This was a guys trip, and we flew overnight from LAX to Miami on the way out, which meant we started the trip pretty exhausted. The December timing helped — warm but not hot, manageable humidity, and the city was busy without being overwhelmed by spring break crowds.

Miami itself was genuinely great. South Beach was worth the visit for the architecture and the scene on Ocean Drive, even if we did not spend the full day there. Little Havana was the most interesting neighborhood — Calle Ocho had a completely different rhythm from the rest of the city, and the food was some of the best of the trip. Brickell had the most polished energy and felt like the right place for dinner and late drinks. Wynwood is the obvious photo stop, but once you get past the murals there is a solid stretch of bars and smaller restaurants that made it worth the time.

Food and drinks were consistently strong. Veza Sur in Wynwood was a good afternoon stop. Little Havana had the best value — simple Cuban spots on and off Calle Ocho that were among the most memorable meals of the trip. Brickell has the widest range from casual to high-end of any neighborhood in the city, and it is easy to eat well there at almost any budget.

For a guys trip the restaurant and bar scene in Miami is genuinely excellent and varied enough that five days would not exhaust it. It rewards some loose planning — knowing one or two anchor spots per neighborhood and then filling in around them as you go.

The Dolphins game was a one-time experience worth having, though I still enjoy watching football on TV more than dealing with the full stadium experience. Fort Lauderdale made sense for the game specifically, but I would not structure a future trip around it.

Miami deserves a dedicated return with a proper Miami base. Five days with the right hotel in the right neighborhood would feel like a completely different trip from what we had — and we left wanting that version.
