Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina: Great Pools, But Watch the Hidden Costs

We used points for this two-night stay, including one free night award, and overall thought it was a really nice hotel for a family-and-friends trip. The property feels polished, family friendly, and better suited to leisure travel than some large convention-style hotels do.

It is a large property — this is a Marriott Marquis, not a boutique — but it avoids the soulless convention-hotel feel. The marina setting helps. The views over the water are genuinely nice, and the whole resort feels more holiday-oriented than business-oriented, which makes a difference when you are traveling with kids.

The pools were the best part of the hotel. There are multiple pool areas and the setup is genuinely resort-style, with enough space that it does not feel crowded even on a busy weekend. The kids could have spent the entire two days there without complaint.

For a family trip, this is what tips the balance. San Diego has a lot of solid hotel options, but the pool quality here is noticeably better than what you get at most comparably priced alternatives. The location near Gaslamp is one of the better urban hotel positions in San Diego. You are close enough to the waterfront and the Gaslamp Quarter to walk, and the trolley turned out to be a better way to see the city than we expected.

We used the trolley to get around rather than renting a car or relying on rideshares the whole time, and it worked really well. San Diego's trolley system is underrated for visitors — it is easy to navigate, covers a lot of useful stops, and removes the parking headache entirely. The downside is straightforward: both parking and dining felt overpriced relative to what you get. This is not unusual for a large marina-adjacent hotel, but it is worth going in with that expectation rather than being surprised by the bill.

If you are not booking on points, look for an AAA rate — it includes a parking discount that meaningfully reduces the daily rate, which adds up fast over two nights.

The onsite restaurants were fine for convenience, but the better meal strategy is to leave the property. Morning Glory for brunch, the farmers market, and Old Town San Diego for mariachi and dinner were the highlights of the trip outside the hotel.
