Why we went and where we stayed

This trip was to celebrate a friend's 40th birthday, so the goal was less about seeing everything and more about having a fun, easy base for a couple of strong nights out.

We stayed at Aria Resort, which still has a great location for a short Vegas trip. It puts you in a very convenient part of the Strip and makes it easy to move between nearby hotels. The downside is that the rooms felt dated and a bit underwhelming relative to the price point and the reputation of the hotel.

What we actually prioritized

Dinner at Mayfair in Bellagio was the main anchor of the trip. It was great and definitely felt celebratory, though it was also expensive.

We also spent time checking out some of the hidden or harder-to-find bar spots, which ended up being one of the more fun parts of the trip. Ghost Donkey, Ski Lodge, Beauty & Essex, and Salt & Ivy all fit well into that kind of Vegas weekend where the point is to bounce around and keep the mood light.

What worked about the trip

For this kind of birthday trip, Vegas works best when you keep the schedule mostly centered on one or two dinner reservations and let the rest of the night unfold from there.

Aria's location helped with that even if the rooms did not impress. Being able to move around easily mattered more than having a standout room.

Bottom line

This was a good version of a short Las Vegas trip because it had a clear reason for being there and did not try to force too much beyond that.

I would still stay in a central Strip location for a trip like this, but I would be more open-minded about hotels than Aria if room quality were a bigger priority.
