Is VEA Newport Beach Worth It? A Candid Staycation Review

We did one night at Marriott's VEA Resort and booked it using a Marriott free night award topped off with points. The resort was nice and the location was really good, but the overall feel was a bit generic rather than distinctive.

VEA is a well-maintained, properly run Marriott resort — the kind of place where nothing goes wrong and nothing surprises you either. The rooms are comfortable, the service was fine, and the property is attractively landscaped. But if you are looking for a hotel with real personality, this is not it.

It was cold during the stay, so the pool scene was not especially inviting and most people ended up crowded into the hot tub instead. That is an important thing to know about this hotel — it is a Southern California resort, but Newport Beach in May can still be cool enough that the pool loses a lot of its appeal.

Even so, kids always love a hotel with a pool, so it still gave the stay an easy built-in activity regardless of the temperature. Just do not build the trip around a warm outdoor pool day without checking the forecast first.

The clear highlight of the trip was Mother's Day lunch at Farmhouse at Roger's Gardens. The garden setting is one of the nicest restaurant environments in Orange County — real greenhouses, flowers everywhere, and an outdoor dining room that actually matches the occasion rather than just being a nice patio.

The food was very good, the service was warm and attentive, and everyone at the table genuinely enjoyed it. For a family Mother's Day meal, it would be hard to find a better option in the area. Book ahead — it fills up fast on weekends and especially on holidays.

The hotel was perfectly fine, but Farmhouse was the reason the trip worked. If we went back to Newport Beach, we would probably try a different hotel and keep the Farmhouse reservation.
